BEI INDEX OPENS 2.07 PERCENT LOWER

Jakarta, Feb. 5 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) here on Friday morning got off to a weak start on Wall Street and regional bourse losses.

The BEI index went down 53.686 points or 2.07 percent to 2,539.529 and the LQ-45 index fell 12,027 points or 2.32 percent to 493.152 points.

Wall Street losses had negatively affected regional bourses and BEI, according to Alfiansyah, a research analyst of PT Sinarmas Securities.

The markets were worried over the global economy which was not yet growing well, he said.

"We predict that the BEI index will continue to plunge to well below 2,600 points," he said.

Among the top losers at the BEI were Mega mining industry shares that fell Rp1,150 to Rp30,900, Astra International shares that dropped Rp750 to Rp34,600, United Tractor shares that declined Rp500 to Rp16,000, Bukit Asam shares that went down Rp500 to Rp16,350, and Gudang Garam shares that decreased Rp250 to Rp25,500.

Meanwhile, the rupiah significantly weakened against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market, here on Friday morning and passed the level of Rp9,400 per US dollar.

The Indonesian currency traded Rp9,405-Rp9,415 per US dollar, down 90 points from Rp9,325-Rp9,335 per US dollar at the market's close a day earlier.***
