S. Korea confiscates 42kg of narcotics last year
SEOUL, Feb. 7 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's customs authorities said Sunday they
confiscated a total of 42 kilograms of narcotics in 150 cases of failed smuggling
attempts last year.
The amount is similar to that of the previous year when 42.4 kilograms were
confiscated, and equals roughly 730,000 doses, according to the Korea Customs
Service.
Methamphetamines and marijuana amounted to 18.5 kilograms and 20.9 kilograms,
respectively, accounting for the largest proportion of confiscated drugs. Heroin
followed with 1.9 kilograms, the office said.
Of the total, 23 kilograms came from South Africa, a sharp increase from the
previous year's 14 kilograms. China followed with 8 kilograms, down from 14
kilograms a year earlier.
Over 80 percent or 34 kilograms were brought by airplane passengers, with 4.7
kilograms and 2 kilograms of drugs attempted to be brought in through
international mail and by boat, the report showed.
