Asiana Airlines' losses increase in 2009 on decreased demand
By Nam Kwang-sik
SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- Asiana Airlines Inc., South Korea's second-largest carrier, reported on Wednesday a broader net loss last year from the year before due to decreased demand for air travel.
Net loss for the carrier came to 231.5 billion won (US$199.4 million) last year,
compared with a loss of 227.2 billion won a year ago, Asiana Airlines said.
Sales dropped 8 percent on-year to 3.89 trillion won in the period, while
operating loss increased to 52.7 billion won in 2009 from 23.5 billion won the
previous year.
"Last year's faltering performance stemmed from a sharp fall in demand for air
travel caused by the global economic meltdown and the spread of the new flu," the
carrier said.
Shares of Asiana Airlines fell 3.2 percent to 3,635 won as of 2:48 p.m. on the
Seoul bourse.
