SEOUL (Yonhap) -- The following is a chronological review of major developments
related to North Korea between Feb. 4-10.

February
4 A lecture is given at the Chollima Hall of Culture in Pyongyang on the 62nd
anniversary of Sri Lanka's independence.
4 Officials in charge of cultural and friendly relations of different embassies
in Pyongyang visit the Revolutionary Museum of the Ministry of Culture and the
Korean Film Studio on the birthday of leader Kim Jong-il
4 A delegation from Kimchaek University of Technology, headed by President Hong
So-hon, returns home after visiting the U.S. at the invitation of Syracuse
University.
4 A film week opens at Taedongmun Cinema on the 10th anniversary of the
conclusion of the treaty of friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation
between the DPRK (North Korea) and Russia.
4 A friendship meeting with members of the missions of international
organizations in Pyongyang is held under the sponsorship of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs on the birthday of leader Kim Jong-il.
4 A national seminar on immortal leadership exploits of leader Kim Jong-il for
deeply grasping them is held at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang.
5 The KCNA says North Korea conducted an investigation into Robert Park, an
American national who was caught for trespassing on the North Korean border and
decided to release him.
5 School youth and children from across the country started a study tour of
leader Kim Jong-il's birthplace in the Mt. Paektu secret camp on the occasion of
his birthday.
5 Rodong Sinmun says defending peace serves as the banner of struggle that should
be held high by the people of the DPRK to build a thriving socialist nation and
by the world's progressives to build a new independent world.
5 Kim Jong-il enjoys a performance of the opera "Evgeni Onegin" on the 10th
anniversary of the conclusion of the DPRK-Russia treaty of friendship, good
neighborliness and cooperation.
6 Rodong Sinmun says that in order to improve the deteriorated inter-Korean
relations and bring about a new phase in accomplishing the cause of reunification
this year, it is necessary to put an end to the anti-DPRK confrontation moves in
South Korea at an early date as they are contrary to the trend of the times.
6 The KCNA says colorful sports meets are planned to be held on the occasion of
the birthday of leader Kim Jong-il, February 16, in the DPRK.
6 Premier Kim Yong-il sends a message of greetings to Tillman Thomas, prime
minister of Grenada, on the occasion of the 36th anniversary of its independence.
He also sends a congratulatory message to Mohamed Ghannouchi on his stay in
office as prime minister of Tunisia.
6 The KCNA says Jong Hak-se is appointed as DPRK ambassador to Nigeria, according
to a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.
6 A delegation of the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee
of the Communist Party of China (CPC) led by head Wang Jiarui flies into
Pyongyang.
7 Talks are held in Pyongyang between the delegations of the International
Affairs Department of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of (North)
Korea (WPK) and the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central
Committee.
7 Senior party and state officials visit Chongsan-ri, Kangso District on the
occasion of the 50th anniversary of Chongsan-ri spirit and method initiated by
President Kim Il-sung.
7 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il provided field guidance to the modernized February 8
Vinalon Complex.
8 The Ministry of People's Security and the Ministry of State Security of the
DPRK release a joint statement regarding the South Korean authorities' attempt to
bring down the system in the DPRK.
8 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il received "Peace Prize for 2009" from the Nepal
Journalist Association.
8 Choe Thae-bok, secretary of the WPK Central Committee, meets with Wang Jiarui,
head of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee.
8 A national meeting is held at the People's Palace of Culture to mark the 50th
anniversary of the Chongsan-ri spirit and the Chongsan-ri method created by
President Kim Il-sung.
8 An inter-Korean working contact for the resumption of tours of Mt. Kumgang and
the Kaesong areas is made in Kaesong.
8 Russian Ambassador to the DPRK Valery Sukhinin hosts a reception on the 10th
anniversary of the conclusion of the treaty of friendship, good neighborliness
and cooperation between the DPRK and the Russian Federation.
8 Kim Jong-il receives the visiting delegation of the International Liaison
Department of the CPC Central Committee led by its head Wang Jiarui.
8 Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly,
sends a congratulatory message to Carlos Papoulias on his re-election as
president of Greece.
9 Rodong Sinmun dedicates an editorial to the 50th anniversary of the Chongsan-ri
spirit and the Chongsan-ri method created by President Kim Il-sung.
9 The 19th international figure skating festival for Mt. Paektu Prize is to be
held in Pyongyang from Feb. 15 on the occasion of leader Kim Jong-il's birthday,
or Feb. 16.
9 A ten-day film show to celebrate Feb. 16 opens with due ceremony at the
People's Palace of Culture.
9 B. Lynn Pascoe, under-secretary-general of the United Nations for the
Department of Political Affairs who is special envoy of its secretary general,
and his party arrive fly into Pyongyang.
9 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun sends a message of greetings to Russian Foreign
Minister Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the
treaty of friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation between the DPRK and
the Russian Federation.
9 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il, again visited the modernized February 8 Vinalon
Complex and watched vinalon cotton being churned out in an endless stream.
9 The Foreign Ministry holds a friendly meeting with staff members of embassies
of European countries in Pyongyang on the occasion of the birthday of leader Kim
Jong-Il.
10 The KCNA says Kim Jong-il was presented with gifts by families of those
related to the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle in China on the occasion of
his birthday.
10 Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun meets with B. Lynn Pascoe, special envoy of the
United Nations secretary-general, and his party at the Mansudae Assembly Hall.
10 A film show is arranged for the military attache corps in Pyongyang on the
occasion of the birthday of leader Kim Jong-il.
10 Kim Jong-il is presented with floral baskets and a congratulatory letter by
the diplomatic corps and officials in charge of cultural and friendly relations
of foreign embassies in Pyongyang on the occasion of his birthday.
10 A national photo exhibition opens to celebrate February 16, the birthday of
Kim Jong-il.
