Samsung opens Olympic pavilion in Vancouver
By Kim Nam-hee
VANCOUVER, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., an official
worldwide Olympic partner for wireless communications equipment, opened its
Olympic pavilion in Vancouver Wednesday where visitors can experience its
products.
Samsung, the world's largest memory chip maker, has operated such a pavilion in
the Olympic host city since the 2000 Sydney Games. The latest one in Vancouver, a
7,500-square feet, two-story building, was built in an environment-friendly way
in keeping with the green image of the Olympics, it said.
At its opening ceremony, Samsung held a demonstration of its cutting-edge
wireless communications technology WOW (Wireless Olympic Works) that enables
users to check information for the Vancouver Olympic Games using Samsung OMNIA II
touchscreen smartphones.
Samsung Electronics President and CEO Choi Gee-sung and Chief Operating Officer
Lee Jay-yong were present at the opening, alongside Gerhard Heiberg, chairman of
Marketing Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC); John Furlong,
chair of the Vancouver Organizing Committee; Gordon Campbell, premier of British
Columbia and Wayne Gretzky, Canadian ice hockey player and a supporter of
Samsung.
"We carried on eco-friendly campaigns while constructing the pavilion for the
Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. We will provide both entertainment and
information for Olympic Games spectators," Choi Gee-sung said.
