GM to produce small cars for emerging markets in Uzbekistan
SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Yonhap) -- General Motors Co. and Uzbek automaker UzAvtoSanoat
signed an agreement Thursday on a joint Uzbekistan-based venture to produce small
cars for consumers in emerging markets, the U.S. automaker's South Korean unit
said.
The deal is expected to help GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co., the local unit of
GM, provide more vehicles on a completely knockdown basis to Uzbekistan, GM
Daewoo said in a statement.
The agreement was signed in Seoul between GM Daewoo Vice President Dwenell Mills
and UzAvtoSanoat Vice Chairman Shuhrat Yusupov, according to the statement.
GM Daewoo did not elaborate details on which models the joint venture will
produce in Uzbekistan.
In the statement, GM Daewoo Chief Executive Officer Mike Arcamone described
Uzbekistan as an "important base for GM Daewoo to boost sales in emerging
markets."
Last year, GM Daewoo exported 199,000 vehicles to Uzbekistan on a completely
knockdown basis, the statement said.
