SEOUL -- South Korea and Uzbekistan on Thursday signed accords on building a
chemicals plant and developing a gas field in the Central Asian country, after
their leaders held a summit in Seoul to discuss measures to further boost
bilateral economic and political cooperation.
The two countries signed a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) on their
US$3-billion project to construct a chemicals plant and develop a gas field in
the Uzbek region of Surgil, South Korea's presidential office said.

S. Korea's labor productivity ranks 33rd in the world: report
SEOUL -- South Korea's labor productivity ranked 33rd among 131 countries
surveyed mainly due to the country's weak service sector, a report by a
state-operated organization said Thursday.
The report by the Korea Productivity Center (KPC) showed the country's labor
productivity, which measures per-capita value-added output, reached an average of
US$42,373 in the 2000-2007 period.

S. Korean envoy to U.S. says Washington remains firm on FTA, N. Korea
SEOUL -- The United States remains unchanged in its resolve to enact its free
trade agreement (FTA) with South Korea and to end North Korea's nuclear weapons
programs, Seoul's ambassador to Washington Han Duck-soo said Thursday.
"As President (Barack) Obama noted in his state of the union address, the U.S.
administration is stressing the need to promote its trade relations, including
the Korea-U.S. FTA, for the creation of jobs and President Obama, too, has been
publicly promoting such a position since his address," the South Korean
ambassador told reporters.

SEOUL -- South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan and Japan's visiting Foreign
Minister Katsuya Okada called for joint efforts Thursday to truly mend ties
between their countries as the Japanese minister offered a rare apology for
Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of Korea.
"Regarding what happened 100 years ago, Japan deprived Koreans of their nation
and left a great wound on their national pride," Okada told a joint press
conference with Yu after their talks here.

SEOUL -- South Korea's central bank froze its key interest rate for the 12th
straight month on Thursday and signaled that it would keep the easing policy for
the time being amid growing economic uncertainty.

economic recovery is sustainable appear, the bank will raise borrowing costs.
