FM calls for building cooperation network with developing nations

SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Yonhap) -- Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan urged the heads of the
country's diplomatic missions Friday to help establish a strong network of
communication with their host nations, saying the country's goal to become a
global leader depends on its relations with other countries.
"For our nation to practically help eradicate world poverty and promote world
peace, it is important for us to accurately understand conditions in other
countries through our diplomatic missions and build a strong network that
connects the countries' governments and our related offices," the minister said
in his closing remarks that marked the end of a five-day conference for missions
chiefs here.
The annual conference began Monday, involving the heads of 117 diplomatic
missions abroad.
Minister Yu especially stressed the need to better communicate with developing
nations.
"I urge those heads of missions in countries subject to our development
assistance to especially pay close attention to what your hosts nations need," Yu
told the meeting.
"We will be received as a true friend of developing nations when we work with the
countries to understand what they need for their sustainable development and find
out how we can help," he added.
The minister said the country will also work to represent the interests of
developing nations in the G-20 economic summit, set to be held here in November.
South Korea currently serves as the chair of the economic summit, the world's
premier forum for international economic cooperation.
