VANCOUVER, Feb. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Mo Tae-bum, the surprise winner of
the men's 500 meter event, clinched his second Olympic medal in the 1,000m event
in Vancouver.
The sprinter, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Monday with South Korea's first
ever gold medal in the speed skating event, made an impressive performance again
in Vancouver, adding a silver to his Olympic resume.
He is the first South Korean speed skater to win more than one medal in a single
Winter Olympic Games. Only short track speed skaters have collected multiple
medals at the Games.
Mo finished first in the 500m event at the 2007 Junior World Championships and
captured two gold medals in the 1,000m and 1,500m at last year's Winter
Universiade held in China.
In the World Cup series competitions held ahead of the Vancouver Winter Olympics,
he made podium finishes in the 1,000m and 1,500m events, ranking second in the
world standings, after world-record holder and Olympic defending champion Shani
Davis of the United States.
Mo holds the national record of 1:42.85 in men's 1,500m, set at the fifth World
Cup competition last year.
He is gearing up to win the 1,500m event on Saturday.
