(ATTN: UPDATES throughout with more details)
VANCOUVER, Feb. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Mo Tae-bum, the winner of the men's
500 meter speed skating event, captured the silver medal in the 1,000m event on
Wednesday, gliding to another podium finish at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Mo, who won the 500m event on Monday by 0.16 second, clocked in at 1:09.12 in the
1,000m speed skating event held at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Vancouver to
finish second after Shani Davis of the U.S. who timed 1:08.94.
American Chad Hedrick came third with 1:09.32.
Davis, who defended the title he won four years ago in Turin, sped up on the
final lap to beat Mo.
When his silver medal was sealed, Mo skated around the oval with Davis, wearing
the South Korean flag over his shoulders.
Mo became the first South Korean speed skater to claim two medals in a single
Winter Olympic Games outside the short track speed skating event since the
country first participated in the St. Moritz Winter Games in 1948.
Among other South Koreans, five-time Olympian Lee Kyou-hyuk finished ninth with
1:09.92, Mun Joon was 18th and Lee Ki-ho ranked 36th.
