11-year-old Iranian author vows to only write children’s books
TEHRAN, March 2 (MNA) -- The youngest Iranian writer said on Monday that she plans to dedicate all her life to writing books for children.
Eleven-year-old Melika Goli has recently endowed all 14 of her books to provide funds for orphans around the world.
She has also said that she will donate all the money raised by the sale of any translation of her books in any country to the children of that country.
“I intend to write for children all my life and I want to become a great cultural figure like Ferdowsi. However, I know that I will never reach that pinnacle because he was truly a great personality,” said Melika, who is the author of “What Do I Want to Do?”
She began her writing career after completing first grade at school at the age of seven when she attended story writing courses her father held for school children. However, she created stories verbally prior to that time.
Melika, who lives with her family in Mashhad, is mainly interested in reading books by foreign writers.
“I can improve my skills through reading (translations of) foreign works, which I think have better fictional plots,” she stated.
Books by British novelist Roald Dahl, American littérateur Shel Silverstein, Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen and Iranian authors Mehdi Azar Yazdi and Sadeq Hedayat are among her favorites.
She criticized Iranian school libraries for their general lack of regard for children’s interests.
“Children are mostly interested in sci-fi books while the school libraries generally provide religious and historical books, which are not very interesting to children,” Melika lamented.
She also censured Iranian TV for its lack of any plan to promote reading.
“Everything except books and reading is promoted on Iranian TV,” said Melika, who has written “Runaway”, “Moneys”, “The Wealthy Daddy” and “The Bride”.
“More Beautiful than Ever”, “The Bicycle”, “The Last Time”, and “The New Boss” are among her other credits.
She sees herself as owing her success to the help she has received from her parents. However, she also thanks her teachers for their support.
