Samsung Electronics rolls out 3D TV in the U.S.
By Lee Youkyung
SEOUL, March 10 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Wednesday that it has
rolled out its three-dimensional (3D) televisions in the U.S. market, seeking to
grab a head start in the sector that TV makers see as the next hot spot.
Samsung, which leads the global flat-screen TV market, unveiled 46- and 55-inch
3D TVs in the U.S. with premium models set to be launched in coming months, the
company said in a release. Those models will later hit the shelves in the global
market,
The 46- and 55-inch models are priced at US$2,599 and US$3,299, respectively, and
they come with a 3D version of "Monsters vs. Aliens," as part of its partnership
with DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., a company spokesman said.
LG Electronics Inc. and Japan's Sony Corp., TV makers that trail behind Samsung,
also bet on the 3D TV products, which give an illusion of depth but require
viewers to wear special glasses to see the image.
While TV makers announced the launch of 3D TV models saying that the high
popularity of 3D films like 'Avatar' will help popularize them in coming years,
market watchers said the scarcity of 3D contents and the necessity of wearing
glasses remain barriers for broader consumers.
Samsung, in a move to address such concerns, has taken an approach that bundles
necessary products for its 3D TV consumers. Buyers of its 2010 3D TVs and 3D
Blu-ray Player will get a package of viewing glasses and 3D contents, under its
exclusive deal with DreamWorks to provide some of its animation, Samsung said.
Japan's Sony Corp., the world's third-largest TV maker and a giant in the gaming
industry, plans to capitalize on its widely available game software in its bid to
the 3D TV market. Sony said its brand of 3D TV is scheduled to be released in
June.
