Nago mayor raps gov`t over relocating Futemma to Camp Schwab
NAHA, Japan, March 13 Kyodo -
Nago Mayor Susumu Inamine slammed the central government Saturday for
considering the idea of relocating a U.S. military airport in Ginowan, Okinawa
Prefecture, to another Marine base in his city without land reclamation.
He was referring to the idea of transferring the U.S. Marine Corps' Futemma Air
Station to Camp Schwab in Nago instead of an existing plan to move it to the
coastal area off the camp, which requires land reclamation.
The Nago city assembly this week unanimously adopted a position document
opposing a proposal to relocate the Futemma facility to Camp Schwab before the
government formally puts the idea on the table.
The central government of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has called into
question the existing plan crafted between Japan and the United States in 2006,
and is trying to come up with an alternative plan by May.
