Bust of Ferdowsi graces University of Oxford


A bust of Ferdowsi was unveiled at the University of Oxford on the occasion of the Shahnameh millennium on May 8.

Set up at the Ferdowsi (Firdousi) Library of Wadham College, the statue of the Persian poet and author of the Shahnameh (The Epic of Kings) was created by British-based Iranian sculptor Mehran Ghahari under the supervision of Wadham College officials and Iran’s cultural office in London.


Iranian luminaries’ statues at Vienna’s UN Office in Vienna


Statues of four Iranian luminaries were unveiled during a ceremony at the United Nations Office at Vienna on June 9.

The statues of Avicenna, Abu Rayhan Biruni, Zakariya Razi (Rhazes) and Omar Khayyam were unveiled at the ceremony.


Safavid documents registered on UNESCO list


A collection of Iranian documents dating back to the Safavid era was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register list late July.

The Safavid era collection comprises the administrative documents of Astan-e Quds Razavi, one of the oldest charity organizations in the world with precedence of at least 327 years’ document keeping.

A total of 34 other works from several countries was also registered on the list during the 9th meeting of the UNESCO International Advisory Committee, held in Bridgetown, Barbados from July 29 to 31.


Iranian art gallery established in Rotterdam


Iran has established an art gallery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in October.

Iran’s deputy ambassador to the Netherlands Hosseini said that the gallery would help stimulate bilateral cultural exchange between Iran and the West, and would play a major role in introducing Persian art.


Noruz and Iranian radifs registered on UNESCO list


Noruz, the ancient celebration of the Iranian New Year, and the titles and items of the radifs in Iranian music were registered on UNESCO’s List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on September 30, 2009.

Noruz was registered on the list as common file from Iran, Azerbaijan, India, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Turkey.


Music Museum of Iran reopens


Masters of music reopened the Music Museum of Iran during a ceremony held on November 15 which was attended by renowned musicians and singers.

Different sections of the museum are home to a variety of musical instruments, such as wind instruments, string instruments, regional instruments and national instruments, a library, an instrument-making workshop, and a gallery.


Poet selected to helm Iranian Academy of Arts


Painter and architect Mir-Hossein Mousavi was fired as director from the Iranian Academy of Arts (IAA) and poet Ali Mo’allem Damghani was selected for the position in late December.

Actor Jahangir Almasi, Ahmadinejad’s advisor on veterans’ affairs and Sacred Defense author Mojtaba Rahmandust and Ahmadinejad’s media advisor Mehdi Kalhor were selected as new members of the IAA.

Similar modifications have been made in the charters of the Iranian Academy of Sciences, the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Iranian Academy of Persian Language and Literature.


European performances of Tehran Symphony Orchestra


The Tehran Symphony Orchestra (TSO) performed the Peace and Friendship Symphony in Italy, France, and Germany and two other countries from January 22 to February 4.

Composed by Majid Entezami, the symphony was originally entitled the Islamic Revolution Symphony, but it has recently been renamed for the European concerts.


Microbiologist appointed head of National Museum of Iran


The Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO) director appointed microbiologist Azadeh Ardakani to the National Museum of Iran (NMI) in early February.

The post was previously held by academics such as Ezzatollah Negahban, who was the father of Iranian archaeology, and Seifollah Kambakhshfard, Firuz Baqerzadeh, and Mehdi Bahrami, who have participated in excavating thousands archaeological sites and have written many academic papers.

X
