Hatoyama wants China-Taiwan ties to grow for community concept

TOKYO, March 19 Kyodo -
Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Friday told Wang Yi, head of the
Chinese government's Taiwan Affairs Office, that he hopes China-Taiwan
relations will develop stably, allowing Hatoyama's East Asian Community concept
to move forward, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.
During their roughly 25-minute meeting at the prime minister's office in Tokyo,
Hatoyama also said Japan will not change its stance of respecting China's
position that Taiwan is ''an inalienable part'' of the Chinese territory.
Wang, for his part, said the relationship between China and Taiwan, which
Beijing sees as a renegade province that must be reunited by force if
necessary, is a matter that concerns the stability in the strait and regional
peace, the ministry said.
Hatoyama noted the need for Japan and China to cooperate with each other on the
disputed gas field development in the East China Sea, reiterating that he wants
to turn the waters into ''the sea of fraternity.''
Wang said he will report Hatoyama's remarks to his government upon his return.
Wang, a former Chinese ambassador to Japan, has been in Japan since Wednesday
at the invitation of the Japanese government. He will stay in Japan until
Sunday, according to the ministry.
