Iraq president meets Ahmadinejad

TEHRAN, March 27 (MNA) -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, who arrived in Tehran on Friday, held talks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Talebani, heading a high-ranking delegation including Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, has visited Iran to attend the Persian New Year (Noruz) festivities in Tehran and Shiraz.

Iran is hosting the Noruz celebrations as for the first time the United Nations recognized Noruz as an international day.

During the meeting with the Iraqi president, Ahmadinejad voiced Iran’s strong support of Iraq’s unity, security, and stability, calling expansion of Tehran-Baghdad ties in the interests of the two nations, governments, and the region.

Ahmadinejad said Talebani’s trip to Iran to participate in Noruz celebrations shows Iraqis’ great affinities to the Persian culture.

“Iran-Iraq relations have been deeply rooted and there has been a close ties between the two nations throughout history,” Ahmadinejad noted, stressing that there is no limit for boosting mutual ties.

Expecting a bright future for Iraq, the Iranian president also called Iraq’s progress in line with the interests of the Islamic Republic and the whole region.

For his part, Talabani said, “The Islamic Republic is regarded as a friend and a brother of the Iraqi nation and government.”

Talabani added Tehran-Baghdad relations are rooted in their “shared history and culture”.

Praising Iran for its full support for Iraq, Talabani said Iran has always been on the side of Iraq over the past sever hardships, saying Baghdad believes that expansion of relations with Tehran is a necessity.
