Mottaki’s tour of Algeria, Gabon and Senegal

ALGIERS/ LIBREVILLE/DAKAR, Apr. 4 (MNA) — Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki who started a tour of Africa on Wednesday has so far visited Algeria, Gabon, and Senegal.

Mottaki met President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Wednesday. The talks focused on regional developments and a meeting of G15 countries in mid-May in Tehran.

Mottaki indicated that part of the purpose of his trip was to deliver an invitation for the meeting of the G15 of which he said Algeria was "one of the important members ", the APS news agency reported.

The G15 -- which brings together 19 countries mostly from Latin America, Asia and Africa -- is currently headed by Iran.

Mottaki described as "solid" relations between Algeria and Iran, who have established a joint high commission, according to APS.

Upon his arrival in Algiers Mottaki told reporters that his talks with Algerian officials would focus on “the latest developments in the Arab Maghreb, Western Sahara, Africa, Palestine, and Iraq, Afghanistan."

Algeria backs Iran's right to nuclear technology

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has said Iran, like any other country which has signed the NPT, has right to use nuclear technology for civilian purposes.

"All the countries, especially Iran, have the right to use nuclear power for peaceful proposes," Bouteflika said in his talks with Mottaki.

Gabon visit

Mottaki who arrived in Libreville on Friday morning stated that he planned to brief Gabon’s officials about Iran’s nuclear issue.

Gabon held the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in March.

“In this visit I will inform officials of Gabon about (Iran’s) nuclear issue especially fuel swap which was proposed in Vienna,” Mottaki told reporters at the airport.

He also said he wished his visit would open a new chapter in relations between the two countries and a reopening of the two countries’ embassies.

During his meeting with Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba, Mottaki said Iran and Gabon seek a destruction of nuclear weapons while supporting countries’ right to a peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Bongo also said that Gabon supports Iran's right to nuclear technology.

Mottaki attends Senegal's 50th independence festivities

Mottaki arrived in Dakar on Saturday to attend Senegal’s Senegal's 50th independence festivities, the Mehr News Agency correspondent who accompanies Mottaki said.

Iran’s top diplomat was expected to meet Senegalese officials as well as other foreign dignitaries attending the festivities.
