Mideast’s largest pellet plant opened in Iran

TEHRAN, Apr. 4 (MNA) – The largest pellet plant in the Middle East came on stream on Saturday in the city of Sirjan, southeastern Iran.

Pelletizing of iron ore combines agglomeration and thermal treatment processes to convert the raw ore into pellets with characteristics appropriate for use in a blast furnace.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad officially inaugurated the plant.

The project started in 2005 and was implemented at the cost of 2.9 trillion rials (some $290 million) and would create around 5,500 jobs directly and indirectly.

The plant has the capacity of producing 5 million tons of pelletized iron ore per year which is sufficient to produce 2-2.5 million tons of steel.
