Japan appoints Yamada as ambassador for ASEAN-related affairs+
TOKYO, April 8 Kyodo -
The Japanese government on Thursday appointed Takio Yamada, minister of the
Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, as ambassador in charge of affairs related to
the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The appointment comes as the 10-member ASEAN grouping is expected to step up
moves toward building a community by 2015. Dialogue partners, including Japan,
are expected to station such ambassadors in Jakarta, where the ASEAN
Secretariat is located.
Yamada, 50, plans to hold frequent talks with senior ASEAN officials and
representatives of the ASEAN countries in the Indonesian capital.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry said in its press release that by having the
ambassador in Jakarta, Japan will be able to respond more quickly to
ASEAN-related issues.
Former Japanese Ambassador for ASEAN Yoshinori Katori was based in Tokyo.
ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
