Iran calls anti-Israeli Egyptian cineastes for cooperation

TEHRAN, April 11 (MNA) -- Iran has announced that the Egyptian filmmakers, who boycotted a French film festival in Cairo over an Israeli entry, will be invited for cinematic collaborations.

“This invitation to director Kamla Abu Zikri and actor Asser Yassin was made because they took a tough stance against Zionism and for their withdrawal from the jury of the French film festival in Cairo,” Iranian deputy Culture minister for cinematic affairs said in a press release on Saturday.

Egyptian filmmaker Ahmed Atef, Abu Zikri, and Yassin boycotted “Rencontres de l’Image” festival after finding out that a short film by an Israeli director would be screened at the event.

Consequently, organizers, the cultural attaché of the French Embassy in Cairo and the National Center for Egyptian Cinema, opened the festival on April 8 without a jury or awards.

The Iranian government encourages every strong stance against the Israeli regime.

In November 2009, French actor and political activist Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, who is famous for his anti-Zionist attitudes, also visited President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Javad Shamaqdari and several other Iranian officials in Tehran.

In addition, Iran also appreciated British director Ken Loach for his decision to take out his “Looking for Eric” from the Melbourne International Film Festival 2009, because the festival received funding from the Israeli regime.

Afterward, “Looking for Eric” was accepted for screening at the 28th Fajr International Film Festival, Iran’s most important cinematic event, which was held in January.

However, Loach and several other foreign filmmakers withdrew their films from the festival in a response to calls by a number of Iranian artists to boycott the event of the year in protest of the Iranian government’s actions toward the opposition.
