OANA conference kicks off in Seoul

SEOUL, South Korea April 22 (MNA) – The Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) Summit Congress commenced in Seoul on Wednesday.
The official opening ceremony will start on Thursday.
The event has been arranged to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the South Korean Yonhap News Agency.
A number of directors from news agencies including Parviz Esmaeeli, the managing director of the Mehr New Agency and the Tehran Times daily, will give lectures at the forum.
Two other Iranian news agencies IRNA and Fars have also representatives at the meeting.
More than 46 news agencies from 37 countries are participating in the four-day event on the theme of "Challenges and opportunities for news agencies."
The presidents of FANA (Federation of Arab New Agencies), AMAN (Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies), and ABNA (Association of Balkan News Agencies), and EANA (European Allience of Press Agencies) are attending the Seoul summit as observers.
"The OANA Summit Congress will be particularly meaningful, as South Korea will host the G-20 summit in Seoul this November," Yonhap News Agency President and CEO Park Jung-chan said last week, noting that 11 of the participating countries in the OANA summit are G-20 members.
"Yonhap will take the OANA meeting as an opportunity to promote the G-20 summit among the regional news agencies. In addition, Asia-Pacific news industry leaders will explore ways to jointly cope with the rapidly changing media landscape," Park said.
Xinhua News Agency from China, Kyodo News Agency from Japan , the Information Telegraph Agency of Russia (Itar-Tass), the Australian Associated Press (APP), the Antara News Agency from Indonesia, and the Bernama News Agency from Indonesia are among the participates of the congress.
The OANA was established in 1961 on the initiative of UNESCO to promote regional news exchanges and now claims 41 members from 33 countries around the globe.
The OANA 31st Executive Board Meeting (EBM) and the 25th Editorial-Technical Experts Group (ETEG) Meeting was held in Tehran November 2009.
On the theme of “A Quest for Global Media Balancing”, proposed by the Mehr News Agency, the meeting was attended by about 40 OANA representatives.
The Mehr News Agency was the host agency of the meeting.
The next meeting of the OANA members will be in Istanbul where the Turkish News Agency of ANADOLU will host the general assembly from November 24-28, 2010.
