Lone suspect apparently involved in poisoned dumpling cases+
TOKYO, April 22 Kyodo -
Officials of Chinese police authorities have told their Japanese counterparts
that a Chinese man arrested recently was apparently the lone suspect in all
three pesticide-tainted dumpling cases that made 10 people in Japan ill,
Japanese police sources said Thursday.
In a two-day meeting between the two sides that ended earlier in the day,
Chinese authorities said they plan to continue investigations so that the cases
involving the suspect, Lu Yueting, a 35-year-old former temporary employee at
Tianyang Food Plant in northern China's Heibei Province, will be established as
criminal acts, the sources said.
Lu is suspected of injecting methamidophos with a syringe into the frozen
dumplings, which were later exported to Japan.
Two people in the city of Chiba showed symptoms of poisoning after eating
Tianyang Food dumplings in December 2007, followed by three people in Hyogo
Prefecture and five in Chiba Prefecture who similarly became ill in January
2008.
Officials of China's Ministry of Public Security and Japan's National Police
Agency were among the participants in the meeting in Tokyo.
An NPA official said that Chinese authorities have been conducing in-depth
investigations into the dumpling cases and that it will continue to cooperate
with them in further investigations.
