Toyota to set up quality control centers in China: senior official
+
NAGOYA, April 22 Kyodo -
Toyota Motor Corp. plans to set up six quality control centers in China to
quickly address quality problems in the vast market, learning lessons from its
recent massive global car recalls, a senior company official said Thursday.
''We will develop bases for engineers to quickly collect information,'' Satoru
Mori, managing officer for China, said in an interview with Kyodo News before a
motor show starts in Beijing on Friday.
The quality control centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Tianjin
and Changchun will try to contact customers within 24 hours after getting
information about problems from dealers, he said.
The massive global car recalls covered the RAV4 sport utility vehicle sold in
China.
Mori also said Toyota intends to offer low-priced vehicles to increase its
customers and expand its presence in China that has grown into the world's
largest vehicle market.
New vehicle sales in China exceeded 13 million units last year and are likely
to surpass 14 million or 15 million this year, Mori said. ''China is a market
that is as important as Japan or the United States for Toyota.''
In response to demand for low-priced cars, Toyota will launch a new vehicle
selling for less than 1 million yen in the subcompact car market in China to
compete with South Korean vehicles, he said. ''We will introduce a new model
whose development has been joined by local staff.''
As for eco-friendly cars that the Chinese government is seeking to diffuse,
Mori said Toyota is considering using its plug-in hybrid car to take part in
eco-friendly car demonstration tests in China. Such vehicles can run on both
fossil fuels and a battery that can be charged at home.
