Iran, Azerbaijan to sign security protocol
TEHRAN, May 3 (MNA) – Iran and Azerbaijan are expected to sign a security agreement in Baku as Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najar will start a two-day visit to Azerbaijan on Monday.
“Iranian and Azerbaijani experts have drafted a security protocol and if the two countries’ interior ministers sign it, it will come into effect,” Iran's deputy interior minister Mehdi Mohammadifard announced on Sunday.
This protocol is concerned with border security, combat against drug and human trafficking, countering organized crime, training border guards, and extradition of criminals, the official explained.
“If the ministers don’t sign the protocol, the experts will revise it and the protocol will be signed during the Azerbaijani interior minister’s visit to Tehran” in the future, he said.
Mohammadifard also said Najar will meet Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Azeri counterpart Ramil Usubov to prepare the grounds for expansion of security and economic ties.
