MNA becomes OANA Executive Board member

TEHRAN, May 3 (MNA) – Managing Director of the Iranian Mehr News Agency (MNA) Parviz Esmaeili became a member of the Organization of the Asia-Pacific News Agencies’ Executive Board.

Speaking on the sidelines of the OANA Summit Congress held in Seoul last April, OANA President Mukhlis Yusuf said, “By being the host agency of the OANA 31st Executive Board Meeting (EBM) in Tehran last November, you have become a member of the Executive Board.”

Praising MNA for its ceaseless and great cooperation in line with meeting the OANA goals, Mukhlis Yusuf called for further involvement of the Mehr News Agency in bridging the gap between the member agencies.

With the confirmation of MNA membership in the Executive Board, Iran is the first country having two seats on the board.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) from Iran having a long, good, and effective record in the dissemination of information among the OANA member states is among the four vice-presidents of the board.

The OANA Executive Board has so far been composed of 11 members including one president, four vice-presidents and six ordinary board members.

Established in 1961 on the initiative of UNESCO to promote regional news exchanges, OANA now brings together 41 news agencies from 33 countries around the globe.

The OANA Summit Congress, held in Seoul from April 21 to 24 on the theme of "Challenges and Opportunities for News Agencies", gathered more than 46 news agencies from 37 countries.

The Yonhap News Agency was the host agency of the summit, which was attended by the presidents of FANA (Federation of Arab New Agencies), AMAN (Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies), ABNA (Association of Balkan News Agencies), and EANA (European Alliance of Press Agencies) as observers.

The OANA General Assembly will be convened in Istanbul on November 24-28, 2010, and the Turkish News Agency of ANADOLU will host the event.
