Iran, 5+1 will likely meet in Turkey for nuclear talks
TEHRAN, May 9 (MNA) – Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran has embraced a Turkish proposal for resuming nuclear talks with the West to be hosted by Turkey.
“This idea has been accepted by Iran. If we agree on a date, this meeting may be held in a short time,” Mottaki said during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu in Istanbul Friday evening.
“The place of the meeting will be probably Turkey. This proposal is a good proposal for us,” Mottaki stated.
Davutoglu also said that he, during his visit to Tehran last month, had proposed the meeting to be held in Turkey.
“We have offered a meeting with 5+1 group in Turkey. Iran is positive on this proposal,” said Mottaki, adding that a reply is being awaited from the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.
He went on to say, “The resumption of the talks between the 5+1 group and Iran is a must. The way for diplomatic efforts should be opened.”
The Turkish foreign minister had suggested talks between Saeed Jalili, Iran’s National Supreme Security Council Secretary, and Ashton as the representative of the 5+1 group.
Turkey and Brazil, who are opposed to new sanctions against Iran, have recently stepped up efforts for a diplomatic solution to tensions over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities.
World powers and Iran have been at loggerheads for months over a proposed deal to supply nuclear fuel for a Tehran research reactor in exchange for low-enriched uranium from Iran.
The deal stalled after Iran insisted the exchange be done on its territory. That was rejected by the world powers.
Turkey-Iran ties improving
Mottaki said that the bilateral relations between Turkey and Iran are improving.
Turkey and Iran play important roles in regional issues, he said, adding that the two nations also cooperate on issues concerning Afghanistan.
He went on to say that Turkey is an important member of the United Nations as well as a good neighbor of Iran.
The constructive meetings between Ankara and Tehran would continue as a political cooperation, he noted.
Asked about Iraqi the elections, Mottaki said the elections were held in a democratic atmosphere and that Iran had always supported territorial integrity of Iraq.
He also expressed hope that a democratic government would be established in Iraq, saying Tehran wants to see a stable Iraq as an important country in the region.
