Terms of six Guardian Council members in Iran end in mid-July

TEHRAN, May 9 (MNA) — The term of office for six members of the 12-member Guardian Council including council chairman Ayatollah Ali Jannati will come to an end this July, GC spokesperson Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei said on Saturday.

The council should by mid-July submit the names of the jurists and lawyers, whose terms will draw to an end, to the Supreme Leader and the Judiciary chief, Kadkhodaei told the Mehr News Agency.

The Guardian Council is composed of six Islamic jurists who are directly appointed by the Supreme Leader and six lawyers who are elected by the parliament from among those nominated by the Judiciary chief.

The terms for Ayatollah Ali Jannati and Gholam-Hossein Elham together with four other members of the council will come to a close this July, he noted.

The GC spokesman said the Supreme Leader may renew the term of office of the jurists for an additional term or elect new jurists to the council.

The Guardian Council is in charge of vetting election candidates for presidency, Parliament and the Assembly of Experts. Ensuring the compatibility of the legislation passed by Parliament with the criteria of Islam and the Constitution is among other duties of the council.
