APA political committee to discuss peace, security in Asia

TEHRAN, May 11 (MNA) — Mohammad Nejad-Hosseinian, secretary general of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), has said that major security issues in Asia and a “declaration of friendship in Asia” will top the agenda of the session of the APA Standing Committee on political affairs in Tehran.

So far, APA member parliaments from Iran, Indonesia, Bahrain, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Republic of Syria, Palestine, Kuwait,
Lebanon, Cambodia, and India have registered to participate in the meeting which will be held on 12-14 May, 2010, Nejad-Hosseinian told the Tehran Times on Sunday.

Major peace and security issues in Asia, follow-up of the implementation of the declaration of friendship and cooperation in Asia, the ways to promote cooperation between APA member parliaments and their respective governments will be among the issues to be discussed in Tehran, he noted.

Considering concerns expressed by APA member parliaments, the secretary general’s report will be focused on terrorism, organized crime, disarmament, proliferation of nuclear weapons, and Israeli atrocities in Palestine, APA chief added.

“Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons have been among major concerns for promoting peace and security in Asia,” he stated.

“To this end and in order to exercise parliamentary diplomacy, the APA has increased its endeavors for interaction between prominent like-minded players in this area,” he said.

“In this regard parts of deliberations in Tehran will focus on disarmament and non-proliferation,” he explained.

Elsewhere, Nejad-Hosseinian said that seeking approval of the “declaration of friendship and cooperation in Asia” will be among other important agendas of the Tehran meeting.

If approved the declaration would be a great breakthrough in the realm of parliamentary diplomacy, he explained.

The “declaration of friendship and cooperation in Asia” will provide a framework for convergence among Asian countries and is a platform for active interaction at a macro level throughout the region, he added.
