G15 foreign ministers meeting kicks off in Tehran

TEHRAN, May 15 (MNA) -- Foreign ministers and expert groups from the Group of 15 meet in Tehran today to lay the groundwork for the meeting of the G15 heads of state on Monday.

The Group of 15 is a group of 18 developing countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America that was established to foster economic cooperation and provide input for other international groups.

It is comprised of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Kenya, Nigeria, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.

The presidents of Algeria, Brazil, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Sri Lanka will be attending the G15 summit on Monday. In addition, the Syrian president, the Qatari emir, and the Turkish prime minister will be special guests of the gathering.

From the Islamic Republic’s perspective, despite the relative improvement in the global economy, there are still a number of lingering issues that have an adverse effect on countries of the Global South and hamper efforts to achieve development goals, such as the energy crisis, soaring unemployment, food and water shortages, climate change, environmental degradation, and the declining price of raw materials, which form the bulk of G15 members’ exports.

However, Iran believes that given the competitive advantage developing countries have over developed countries, there are good prospects for the efforts to increase the G15’s share in commodity, service, and capital markets.

Tehran Friday prayers leader Hojjatoleslam Kazem Sediqi said on Friday that the G15 summit shows Iran’s strong position in international diplomacy.

He also expressed hope that the G15 summit in Tehran would help resolve problems in developing states.

Arak Friday prayers leader Hojjatoleslam Ghorban-Ali Dorri-Najafabadi told worshipers that the United States’ wrong policies have made that country isolated.

The fact that a number of high-ranking officials are coming to Iran to attend the G15 summit shows the correctness of the Islamic Republic’s stances, he stated.
