Iran's subsidy reforms plan starts in autumn

YASOUJ, May 15 (MNA) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said the subsidy reform plan will be implemented in the second half of the Iranian calendar year which started on March 21.

“Subsidy reform plan is the biggest economic plan over the past 50 years and will be carried out in the second half of the year,” Ahmadinejad said during a televised interview in Yasouj on Thursday.

The plan is aimed at saving resources, increasing creativity, and distributing funds fairly, he stated.

The administration is currently compiling information on families’ economic status and opening bank accounts for those eligible to receive cash subsidies.

Cash will be deposited in families’ accounts two months prior to the implementation of the plan, he added.

“We hope that this plan would not cause any negative effect,” he added.

Subsidy reform plan envisages the liberalization of the prices of fuels and some other subsidized goods and redirecting the savings into the production and agriculture sectors.

The administration has also announced that it will compensate the low-income families for the inflationary effects of the plan by paying cash subsidies to them.

The administration had earlier announced it is ready to carry out the plan from the beginning of the summer and the Majlis had called on the administration not to delay the plan.
