China Premier Wen to visit Japan from May 30, meet Hatoyama May 31

BEIJING, May 15 Kyodo -
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao plans to pay a three-day official visit to Japan
from May 30 and hold talks with Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on May 31,
sources familiar with Japan-China relations said Saturday.
Wen is scheduled to hold an audience with Emperor Akihito during the visit,
which is part of a four-nation tour from May 28 to June 3 that will also take
him to South Korea, Mongolia and Myanmar, the sources said.
Wen and Hatoyama are expected to sign a new bilateral initiative to ensure food
safety, the sources said.
The two countries made progress in investigations into a case involving tainted
Chinese-made dumplings that sickened 10 people in Japan in December 2007 and
January 2008, after Chinese police arrested a Chinese suspect earlier this
year.
The two leaders are also likely to discuss disputes over China's recent
activities in the sea around Japan, including pursuit by a Chinese marine
survey ship of a Japan Coast Guard vessel in the East China Sea.
Wen plans to arrive in Tokyo in the afternoon of May 30 after attending a
summit of Japan, China and South Korea in South Korea.
It will be the first official visit to Japan by a Chinese leader since
President Hu Jintao in May 2008. Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso paid
an official visit to China in April last year.
