Iran warns about environmental challenges in Persian Gulf
TEHRAN, May 19 (MNA) – Environmental Protection Organization chief Mohammad-Javad Mohammadizadeh has warned about the environmental issues endangering ecosystem of the Persian Gulf.
Uncontrolled construction in the coastal areas, drying up of the sea and changing the shape of coastlines to develop onshore facilities, and excessive exploitation of marine resources are some of the most important challenges facing the Persian Gulf, Mohammadizadeh said on Tuesday.
The Persian Gulf is the habitat for some vulnerable marine creatures like coral which has added to the ecological importance of this waterway, he said.
He went on to say that the sea is almost an enclosed area with an average depth of 35 meters and low water exchange with open seas and a high seawater salinity level which make the sea susceptible to environmental problems.
Mohammadizadeh also called for cooperation and interaction among officials to preserve the enormous variety of marine life in the Persian Gulf.
