Global South scores a diplomatic triumph in Tehran

TEHRAN, May 19 (MNA) -- Iran, Turkey, and Brazil scored a historic diplomatic victory on Monday when their heads of government signed a nuclear fuel swap deal in Tehran.

The deal calls for Iran to hand over some of its supply of low-enriched uranium to Turkey.

Within a year, Western governments and the International Atomic Energy Agency would be expected to provide Iran 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched uranium in exchange for 1,200 kilograms of 3.5 percent enriched uranium.

China welcomed the agreement and called for more negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said on Tuesday, “China has noted the relevant reports and expresses its welcome and appreciation for the diplomatic efforts all parties have made to positively seek an appropriate solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.”

“China considers we should resolve the Iran nuclear issue through the channels of dialogue and negotiations,” he added.

The Tehran agreement has slowed the momentum the United States and its allies Britain, France, and Germany have been building for a new round of United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iran.

It will also boost the morale of Brazil, Turkey, and the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement, which are the true face of the international community and which are opposed to the efforts to impose sanctions on Iran.

The Tehran agreement is another move by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to defend the Global South against the hegemonistic designs of the United States and unprincipled Western diplomacy.

The U.S. and its allies always mention “Iran’s nuclear designs” but never call for the dismantlement of Israel’s nuclear arsenal, which is like a sword of Damocles hanging over the entire Middle East, and they never acknowledge the fact that Israel’s nuclear weapons program may spark a regional arms race.

Western officials also never acknowledge that Israel constitutes an acute threat to peace and stability in the world, is a serious impediment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and is a potential nuclear flashpoint.

The Tehran agreement shows that the countries of the Global South are beginning to assume their rightful place on the international stage and are having some success in their efforts to make dialogue and diplomacy the currency of the day as opposed to the language of aggression.
