UN highlights Iran’s role in Afghanistan
TEHRAN, May 24 (MNA) – Iran has always played a constructive role in Afghanistan, said Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations’ special representative for Afghanistan.
De Mistura made the remarks on Sunday in a meeting with Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee chairman.
He thanked Iran for playing an effective role in helping to establish peace and security in Afghanistan.
The UN representative also underscored the importance of regional cooperation to restore peace and stability in Afghanistan, saying the country will remain unstable without a viable regional cooperation.
Boroujerdi said if military expenses were directed toward the economic development of Afghanistan, Afghans would have now benefitted better results, a reference to NATO and U.S. military expenditures in the war-torn country.
He said the presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan has not only increased drug production but also added to insecurity at the cost of civilian lives.
