Tehran nuclear declaration ushers in new era: Iranian President
TEHRAN, May 24 (MNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the Tehran nuclear declaration will usher in a new era in international diplomacy.
The nuclear declaration has provided an opportunity for dialogue and interaction for all sides, Ahmadinejad said in a telephone conversation with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday.
On the sidelines of the Group of 15 summit, which was held in Tehran on May 17, Iran, Turkey, and Brazil issued a declaration, according to which Iran would ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.
The Iranian president highlighted the important role Turkey and Brazil could play in determining the outcome of the nuclear declaration.
He also stated that through the expansion of ties with brotherly nations, Tehran seeks to create a new atmosphere in international relations.
The world should eventually reach a point where all countries are able to use nuclear technology meant for peaceful purposes while no country possesses nuclear weapons, Ahmadinejad added.
The Turkish prime minister told Ahmadinejad that the Tehran declaration provides a great opportunity and said Turkey would make every effort to muster international support for the fuel swap agreement.
