Tehran Municipality begins making replicas of stolen statues
TEHRAN, May 24 (MNA) -- Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf announced that Tehran’s Beautification Organization will be replacing stolen sculptures with new ones in the urban environments of Tehran.
A series of bronze statues situated in local neighborhoods and parks in Tehran were reported missing over the past month, while no reliable source has taken charge of the case and no promising news has so far been released.
Qalibaf stated that the municipality will be cooperating with the police in tracking down the stolen statues, but it is up to the police to pursue the case, and eventually recover the stolen works of art and find the thieves.
The statues were presumably stolen for the scrap value of the metal used in making them, Tehran Municipality’s Statue Office director Mojtaba Musavi had said earlier.
Over the past month, more than 12 bronze statues were reported missing, most of which were believed to have been heisted during the Noruz holidays from March 21 to April 2.
The stolen works include busts of two leaders of the Iranian Constitutional Movement, Sattar Kahn in Sattar Khan Street and Baqer Khan in Shahr-Ara Street, and the bust of Iranian master of intarsia art Mohammad-Hossein Sani’khatam at Mellat Park as well as two other sculptures from the courtyard of the Iranian Artists Forum.
A bronze statue of a “Calf” located in the courtyard of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Tehran, and a bust of Avicenna in Behjatabad Park in the Karim Khan Zand neighborhood were also among the statues vanishing over the past few weeks.
Some statues were crafted by late masters belonging to a specific period from art history. And here lies the question: How could artwork from this era possibly be reproduced?
