Iranian filmmaker Nurizad released from prison
TEHRAN, May 24 (MNA) -- Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Nurizad was released from Tehran’s Evin prison on Sunday after five months of detention.
The news was reported by the Khabar Online website, the internet version of the Persian daily Khabar.
Nurizad, who is also a journalist, was detained on December 20, 2009 following his objections to the Iranian government’s actions toward the opposition after the 2009 presidential election.
Last Thursday, the Islamic Revolution Court website reported that Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi had visited Nurizad and Jafar Panahi, another Iranian filmmaker detained in Evin prison.
During the visit, he ordered the requests of Panahi and Nurizad to be examined. However no details were given about the filmmakers’ requests.
Last week, there were rumors that Nurizad’s vision had been damaged after he was attacked by five people during outside recreation at the prison. The Islamic Revolution Court website denied the rumor and stated that Nurizad was in good health.
Panahi, who was arrested in early March, allegedly for making a movie about the election, went on hunger strike this week to protest the circumstances of his detention.
