Iran hands over nuclear fuel swap letter to IAEA

ISTANBUL, May 24 (MNA) -- Iran has handed a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) outlining Tehran nuclear declaration, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast announced on Monday.

The letter was submitted to the secretary-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency by the Iranian, Turkish, and Brazilian envoys to Vienna, Mehmanparast, who is heading a media delegation to Turkey, told reporters in a press conference.

On the sidelines of the Group of 15 summit, which was held in Tehran on May 17, Iran, Turkey, and Brazil issued a declaration, according to which Iran would ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.

The exchange would take place in Turkey under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran.

The spokesman described Tehran declaration as a great achievement showing that great countries are able to resolve their problems on their own.

Highlighting the significant role of Brazil and Turkey in signing the 10-point declaration, he said, the nuclear declaration has provided an opportunity for dialogue and interaction.
