Saudi Arabia and UNRWA sign cooperation accords Jeddah, July 13, SPA – An Agreement of joint cooperation was signed here on Saturday evening between the Saudi Committee for Relief of the Palestinian people and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to implement a number of urgent relief programs at a total cost of SR 22,500,000 in addition to the signature of a contract for the supply of equipment and medical supplies to Palestinian hospitals and health centers at the cost ofmore than SR five million.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Saed Al Urabi Al Harthi, the adviser of Interior Minister and head of the Saudi Relief Committee of the Palestinian People, and UNRWA's Commissioner-General Ms. Karen AbuZeid.

In a press conference, Dr. Al Harthi said that the Committee, in accordance with orders and directives of Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz, the Minister of the Interior and General Supervisor of the Committee, will finance a number of urgent relief programs including a scheme to secure basic foodstuffs at a cost of SR 11,250,000 for the Palestinian people who are affected inside the Gaza Strip, in addition to another scheme of securing medicines and medical suppliesat a total cost of SR 3,750,000.

He added that agreements of cooperation with UNRWA also included the provision of health care for Palestinian refugees in a number of Palestinian camps in Lebanon through the provision of medicines andmedical supplies at a total cost of SR 3,750,000.

He noted that the Committee signed a contract to provide kidney dialysis, chairs and equipments for hospitals and medical centers in Palestine, in cooperation with the concerned bodies at a cost of morethan SR five million.

Dr. Al Harthi said "these programs and projects, which will be implemented for the relief of the Palestinian people, comes in the context of the humanitarian and noble social works of the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia led by the Custodian of the Two Holy, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, and the Crown Prince towards the affected and needed people everywhere, especially for the sake of ourbrothers in Palestine".

On her part, Ms. Karen Abu Zeid stressed the importance of theagreements for the UNRWA and Palestinian refugees alike.

She expressed appreciation for the support extended to the Agency by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which under its Saudi Committee in this context, has generously financed reconstruction projects in Gaza and the West Bank, including the reconstruction project of Rafah camp, which was destroyed by Israeli raids during the Intifada (uprising) as well as contributions through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and its participation in Rafah Vienna Conference held recently toraise funds for the reconstruction of Nahr Al Bared".

She greatly valued the aid provided by the Saudi Committee", noting that agreements signed today "will provide three million dollars for food aid, which will feed more than 31,000 refugee families in Gaza for three months and one million dollars to bring antibiotics and artificial limbs to Gaza, which will make a real difference to the lives of thousands of refugees in addition to another million dollars for fuel trucks, which will enable the Agency to provide utility services and environmental health services and also to restart the generators in emergencies and heating systems that could benefit therefugees".
