Iranian parliament to elect presiding board today

TEHRAN, May 26 (MNA) – The Majlis (parliament) is set to hold a vote today to elect a speaker, two deputy speakers and members of its presiding board.

In the voting, speaker, deputy speakers and members who hold a seat on the presiding board are elected for a one-year term.

The incumbent speaker Ali Larijani is the uncontested candidate for the post of speaker. Most of the MPs believe Larijani has had an acceptable record in defending national interests.

The principlist faction, which holds the sway in the parliament, held a session on Monday and elected their candidates.

The current Deputy Speaker Mohammad-Reza Bahonar failed to win his fellows’ vote and according to the faction’s bylaw should not run for the election.

However, many independent MPs have asked him to ignore the faction’s decision and announce his candidacy.

Mohammad Hassan Abutorabifard, the current second deputy speaker, and Shahabeddin Sadr, an MP sitting on the health committee, have been announced as the principlists’ candidates for the post of deputy speakers.

The Majlis minority faction has announced if Bahonar does not declare candidacy, the faction will introduce Masoud Pezeshkian, a former health minister in the Khatami administration, for the post.

If Bahonar runs for the election, it is highly probable that he will be elected as the deputy speaker, so in that case the minority faction will not introduce any candidate, MP Mohammad Mehdi Shahriari told the Mehr News Agency on Tuesday.
