Iran's IRGC handing over security in southeast to tribal groups
TEHRAN, May 26 (MNA) – The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps is handing over security control of the country’s southeastern areas to local tribal groups, the IRGC chief said on Tuesday.
Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said paying more attention to cultural matters and issues pertaining to living conditions will also help promote security in those regions.
Jafari, who was addressing a conference on geography, development, defense, and security in southeast country, said the IRGC had the responsibility to provide security in the southeastern areas in two different periods:
In 1990s, IRGC took control of security operations for two years and conducted a series of counter-insurgency operations.
However, the military actions could not root out counter-revolutionary groups, and from 1995-2008 the security control operations were handed over to regional police forces.
But this action did not improve the security situation in the region and the IRGC retook control of security until now. The steps taken by the IRGC has led to the disarmament of the counterrevolutionary groups.
Now with handing over security operations to tribal groups it is expected that security improves in the region.
The top commander went on to say that threats must first be identified in order to be tackled, and opportunities must be utilized to create greater security for the people living in the area.
The IRGC chief also said fighting poverty is very important in promoting security in southeast country.
“Talk of security without this (fighting poverty) is like flogging a dead horse.”
On the emergence of Wahabbi thoughts in southeast Iran, he said, “The ground for promotion of the vicious thought of Wahabbism should be eradicated in the region.”
