Don’t get tricked by U.S., Iranian envoy advises Russia
TEHRAN, May 27 (MNA) -- The Iranian ambassador to Russia has advised Moscow to maintain its strong relations with Iran.
“I advise the Russians, for the sake of their own national interests… and in a situation where the United States is seeking to undermine Iran, not to cooperate with the U.S.,” Ambassador Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi stated in an interview with the ISNA news agency in Moscow.
He also advised Russia not to seek its interests through short-term cooperation with the United States, adding that the U.S. will soon be pursuing its interests in a different manner.
“The green light the United States is showing Russia will not last long… and in the pursuit of its domineering policies, Russia’s turn will also come,” Sajjadi noted.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian ambassador to Russia stated that the United States, with the aid of the Zionist regime, has been conducting a smear campaign against the Islamic Republic, particularly with regard to Iran’s nuclear program.
MP Kazem Jalali of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has also urged Russia to reconsider its approach toward Iran.
“The way the Russians responded to the Tehran declaration and the consensus they have reached with the United States about issuing a (United Nations sanctions) resolution against Iran shows that they are working with the U.S. behind the scenes. But the Islamic Republic is keeping a close eye on Russia’s actions,” Jalali told ISNA in Tehran on Tuesday.
He stated that ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States has been seeking to establish a new order in the international power structure, namely the creation of a unipolar world with the U.S. at the top of the hierarchy.
The Islamic Republic was one of the first countries to oppose this new world order and has paid the greatest price for standing up to U.S. unilateralism, he added.
After Boris Yeltsin, like the Islamic Republic of Iran, Russia under former president Vladimir Putin vehemently opposed U.S. unilateralism and favored a multi-polar system, and thus a unity of purpose developed between Iran and Russia, which in turn led to the expansion of bilateral ties, Jalali observed.
“Therefore, for this reason, I still hope that in the remaining days until the date the sanctions resolution is issued against the Islamic Republic, the Russians will revise their attitude… and stop their double games.”
This double-standard approach will make Russia lose face in the eyes of the international community, the MP noted.
