Iran's Royan instituteto clone drug-sniffing dogs

TEHRAN, May 29 (MNA) – The Royan institute has undertaken the project to clone 4000 police dogs capable of sniffing out drugs, announces Mohammad-Hossein Nasr-e Esfahani, the director of the Royan research center in Isfahan.

The Royan Institute for Reproductive Biomedicine, Stem Cell Biology and Technology is a leading Iranian research center involved in embryonic stem cell technology and regenerative medicine.

“Being able to clone animals is an honor for Iran; several years ago we couldn’t imagine to make such achievements” Nasr-e Esfahani said in Qom in a meeting with Qom governor general on Thursday.

He also announced that the Royan institute has a plan to clone ram from the cells of sheep in the near future.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Nasr-e Esfahani highlighted the importance of research on stem cells and said Iran will have a shinning future in this field.

Stem cells will revolutionize treatment of diseases and every cell needed for treatment of patients can be produced and that is why research on stem cells is highly important.

On the activities of the institute on infertility treatment, he said infertility is the second cause of divorce in the country, so Iran has started to conduct research on the causes of infertility and Iranian specialists have innovated new methods of infertility treatment.
