Council to filter Iranian shorts and docs for foreign events

TEHRAN, May 30 (MNA) -- A special council will sort out Iranian short and documentary films for international festivals and markets from now on.

The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance assigned Iran’s Experimental and Documentary Film Center (EDFC) the task of establishing the council as soon as possible.

“It is obvious that only those films that can obtain approval from the council would allowed to participate in foreign markets and festivals,” Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Javad Shamaqdari said in a press release on Saturday.

Iranian feature-length films also have to be approved by a council, which was recently established by Shamaqdari, to premiere in foreign events.

Iranian films selected for foreign premieres should not tarnish our national image, Shamaqdari has previously said.

“Our filmmakers are allowed to dialogue with our people through their films, but it would be against our national interests if they wanted to communicate with foreigners on sensitive topics and we must change this situation,” he noted.

“Our people are able to hold a confidence but foreigners cannot always be depended upon to do so,” he stated.

Due to this policy, several Iranian films including Abdorreza Kahani’s “Nothing”, a social drama on a deprived family, were rejected by the council to be allowed to participate in the Cannes Film Market, which ended last week.
