‘Conditions not right for sanctions against Iran’

TEHRAN, May 31 (MNA) – Grounds are not prepared for a new UN Security Council sanctions resolution against Iran, MP Gholamreza Mesbahi Moghadam has stated.

The West has reacted differently to the Tehran nuclear declaration, some have welcomed it, but some have rebuffed it, and those who have been unreceptive, will soon have to back down because conditions are not right for tough sanctions against Iran, Mesbahi Moghadam said in Tehran on Sunday.

On May 17, Iran, Turkey, and Brazil issued a declaration, according to which Iran would ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.

Mesbahi Moghadam pointed out that there are major differences between the Tehran declaration and the nuclear fuel swap proposal discussed during the Vienna talks in November, saying the current fuel exchange agreement is backed by two non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, a reference to Turkey and Brazil.

The Vienna Group expected Iran to hand over its LEU to Russia to be enriched up to 20 percent level, then Russia was to ship the 20 percent-enriched uranium to France for conversion into fuel rods needed for the Tehran nuclear reactor, however, there was no guarantee that the uranium would be ultimately sent to Iran, the MP noted.

But under the current agreement the LEU stockpile will remain the property of the Islamic Republic in Turkey until the fuel rods are delivered to Iran, he explained.
