'Iran seeks interaction with Europe based on mutual respect'
BRUSSELS, Belgium, June 3 (MNA) – Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran’s policy toward European Union is promotion of dialogue and interaction based on mutual respect and equality.
Mottaki made the remarks during his speech at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday.
He arrived in Brussels on Tuesday to deliver a speech and hold talks with European Parliament’s officials.
Mottaki said Iran’s message in the new millennium is compassion, friendship, dialogue and primacy of justice.
Many of the elements that have emerged as challenges in relations between Iran and Europe can be turned into opportunities for greater cooperation, he stated.
He appreciated the ever-increasing public awareness regarding problem in Iran-Europe relations.
He said access to diverse sources of energy and its security are important EU priorities, adding that demands in Europe and Iran’s capabilities in this sector can be complementary.
Mottaki also said that relationship is a two way road. One side can not and should not expect to decide for both sides.
He said he believes that in areas where Iran and Europe have common views the best approach is to work together to identify those areas, define appropriate mechanism and try to reach agreement through understanding, dialogue, and consultations.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Mottaki said drug trafficking is regarded as an issue of global concern, adding it in many ways has direct links with organized crimes and terrorism.
The production of narcotics reached from 300 tones in the past to the current level of 1500 tons, he stated.
Iran has spent billions of dollars and lost many of its best young people in battling with traffickers.
Also during a lunch reception in Brussels on Tuesday, Mottaki said Iran has always supported dialogue rather than confrontation.
The foreign minister also said it is essential that all countries cooperate to resolve global problems and therefore all nations must be given opportunity to express their ideas.
