‘West will sink deeper into quagmire if it rejects Tehran deal’

TEHRAN, June 13 (MNA) – Iran has warned the West it will push itself into a corner furthermore if it does not accept the nuclear fuel swap deal signed between Iran, Turkey, and Brazil.

According to the declaration signed on May 17, Iran would ship 1200 kilograms of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey to be exchanged for 120 kilograms of 20 percent enriched nuclear fuel rods to power the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for cancer treatment.

The West should accept Iran’s swap proposal in order to preserve its credibility, Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Director Ali Akbar Salehi said during a visit to the IRNA news agency on Saturday.

The best way to approach Iran’s nuclear issue is to agree with the fuel exchange offer, Salehi noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said Tehran expects Japan to live up to its promise to help construct new nuclear power plants in Iran especially as Iran has agreed to nuclear swap deal.

Salehi said before the Tehran deal was issued the Japanese ambassador to Tehran had announced that Japan is ready to cooperate with Iran in building new nuclear power plants.

Japan even frankly asked Iran not to act hastily in signing contracts with other countries in this regard, he added.

On the startup of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, Salehi said the last phase of the current test of the plant will be completed in one week.

No other tests will be needed and the power plant will come on stream in September after going through some necessary final procedures, explained Salehi, a nuclear physicist.

Salehi also expressed hope that studies will be carried out by the end of the Iranian year (which ends March 20, 2011) to determine an appropriate place for putting up a new enrichment facility.
