Japan, China agree to strengthen mutually beneficial ties+
TOKYO, June 13 Kyodo -
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Japan's new Prime Minister Naoto Kan agreed
Sunday to strengthen strategic and mutually beneficial relations between the
two countries and start negotiations for an early conclusion of a treaty over
the joint development of an oil field in East China Sea, the Japanese Foreign
Ministry said.
In a teleconference held in the evening, Wen invited Kan to visit China at a
''convenient time,'' and Kan accepted, according to the Chinese Foreign
Ministry. The two also discussed the recent sinking of a South Korean warship,
reportedly the result of an attack by a North Korean torpedo, Chinese Foreign
Ministry officials said.
While Kan requested that Japan and China cooperate in showing the will of the
international community in responding to the incident, Wen only said that close
cooperation between Beijing and Tokyo is important, Japanese Foreign Ministry
officials said.
After congratulating Kan on becoming prime minister, Wen conveyed his hope of
strengthening bilateral trust through frequent communication and removing
obstacles, the Chinese officials said.
In the talks held at the request of the Chinese side, Kan asked for a meeting
with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of a summit of the Group of
20 advanced and emerging economies in Canada later this month, and Wen
responded he will convey the request to Hu, according to the Japanese
officials.
