UAE highlights anti-trafficking efforts
Abu Dhabi, June 17, 2010 (WAM)- Following the opening of two more shelters for victims of human trafficking in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE on Tuesday reaffirmed that combating human trafficking and protecting victims of this crime remain top priority on its national agenda.
In reference to the US State Department's 2010 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, which was released on Monday, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Anwar Gargash and Chair of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking commented that "The UAE monitors all international reports and benchmarks and assesses them objectively. It welcomes recognition of the country's anti-trafficking efforts, constructive criticism, as well as collaborative efforts. This year's TIP Report takes into account the measurable progress on the ground in the UAE's concerted fight against this crime, however the UAE is aware that several challenges still lie ahead and we are committed to continuing our efforts alongside our international partners. " At least 43 cases of human trafficking were registered in the UAE during 2009, compared to 10 and 20 cases in 2007 and 2008 respectively, which reflects the progress made since Federal Law 51 was enacted in late 2006.
According to the UAE's annual trafficking report released in May, the measures undertaken in 2010 as part of the comprehensive four-pillar strategy include: expanding the size and scope of the anti-trafficking committee; establishing a human rights department at the Ministry of Interior, starting a new facility at Dubai Police to monitor and control human trafficking; formally opening Ewaa - a new shelter for victims in Abu Dhabi; ratifying the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children; conducting regular workshops and training sessions to sensitise law enforcement officials; and launching a website to serve as an official source of information and forum for interaction between the public and law enforcement agencies.
The government will launch its first public awareness campaign at airports and UAE embassies abroad towards the end of 2010 to highlight its victim support and protection services and also deter potential criminals with the clear message that the UAE maintains a zero tolerance approach to the crime of human trafficking . – Emirates News Agency, WAM
