Iran ready to help resolve BP oil spill crisis
TEHRAN, June 22 (MNA) -- Experts of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps are ready to help resolve the Gulf of Mexico oil spill crisis if the IRGC receives an official request, IRGC Brigadier General Rostam Qasemi said on Monday.
On April 20, an explosion occurred at an oilrig of the British oil giant BP in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in an oil spill that has yet to be capped.
BP has spent $2 billion so far in efforts to contain the oil spill and for compensation payments, with no end in sight to the disaster or the price tag.
“If Americans and Britons and also the Western companies find themselves incapable of capping the oil spill, (they can) ask Iran, (we) will study the case, and send… IRGC experts to the region to help prevent the continuation of this serious crisis,” Qasemi stated.
Iran has experience in containing oil spills in some neighboring countries in the Persian Gulf, such as Kuwait, he noted.
He went on to say that the world is concerned about the environmental crisis unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico and its potential effect on the lives of residents of Caribbean islands.
If the oil spill enters the sea currents, it will spread to the coasts of Jamaica and other countries, causing an environmental and humanitarian catastrophe, he added.
